What is Sloswicke’s Almshouse Charity?

Created by the will of Richard Sloswicke, who died in 1658, the registered Charity he created is now a Registered Provider of Social Housing and has grown from just 3 homes to 46 Almshouses across 4 sites, all close to Retford town centre. How much does Sloswicke’s social housing cost?

This depends on the property and particularly the number of bedrooms but as a general rule our Weekly Maintenance Charges (we do not charge rent) are 20% or more below open market rents for similar properties.

Almshouses are the oldest form of Social Housing in the country having been in existence for over 1000 years. Around 36,000 people live in Almshouses across the country through 2600 volunteer run Charities like Sloswicke’s.

Sloswicke’s provides accommodation for people, generally aged over 60 or over, with some Retford connection and who are in need of help with housing due to poverty or financial hardship which may be combined with some other health or social need such as isolation or loneliness.

Register your interest in becoming a beneficiary of the charity and one of it’s residents by email to sloswickes@brown-co.com or phone 01777 709112 or at Brown & Co’s office on Grove Street Retford. You will then be sent details of properties as they become available and at that point you can complete our application form and submit it as explained. You will be asked to explain what your housing needs are. You must make a full disclosure of all your circumstances and be open and honest. Appointments as a beneficiary can be revoked if something comes to light which was not fully disclosed in the application.
